Henna and Beets

My friend and "natural hair frugalista" Candyce henna'd her hair the other day. We've both been trying to get redder hair from henna, so she told me she'd put beets into her henna mix, and it worked to make her red hair look brighter! So I tried it, of course.

It was super embarrassing at the grocery store because I had no idea what a beet was (what I thought were beets were actually turnips). At least I've learned something! LOL. I cut a whole beet and boiled it in just enough water to cover the pieces when in the pot. I boiled for maybe 20 minutes on medium-low.

I used that water to mix 150 g of henna (one box of my usual Dulhan Mehendi). I just added water until the consistency was like cake mix. Then I added a little bit of ACV and let the mixture sit overnight.

I applied the henna to my hair and let it sit overnight Saturday night, and then washed it out with Suave naturals conditioner on Sunday morning. It rinsed pretty clean, and didn't take a long time. Then I DC'd my hair with AOHR for 2 hours (I was doing some cleaning) and then with heat for 30 minutes (I like to use heat with my DC after I henna).

I wore my hair in a braidout on Sunday, Monday and today I put it into a bun. It takes a few days for the henna to be its brightest, but I dunno that I look any more red than usual. What do you ladies think? At least it feels stronger and A LOT healthier.

I'm straightening tonight (I'm excited to see how long my hair is...or isn't), so I'll cowash with RenPure Organics "my pretty hair is parched" Conditioner, then use Aphogee 2-min Keratin Reconstructor, and then do a final rinse with cold water/ACV.
My plan was to be at least touching BSL, but that probably isn't going to happen, and I'm okay with that. I know why I didn't retain that much length: I let my hair get tangled, I wasn't consistent with my henna, and I'd stopped using protein. Now that I know what I was doing wrong, come December, I'll definitely be at BSL =)

Famous.Fierce.Feisty - Janelle Monae

Janelle Monae is a 24-year-old singer/songwriter from Kansas City, MO. After finishing high school Janelle Monae (born Janelle Monae Robinson) moved to New York to attend the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, where she pursued musical theater.

Disappointed with the roles she was offered in New York, Monae moved to Atlanta in 2004, where she caught the attention of Outkasts's Big Boi. Impressed with Monae, Big Boi featured her on his compilation Got Purp Vol 2, and she also appeared on Outkasts' 2006 soundtrack for Idlewild. Monae was signed to Bad Boy Records in 2008. Her debut EP entitled, Metropolis Suite I: The Chase, received an Emmy nomination in 2009.

As for the hair...Monae tends to stick to the same style--a natural version of the pompadour. I'm not gonna lie; it annoys me. I understand that she has an image, but it was SO DIFFICULT for me to find pictures of her wearing her hair in a different style!

Ah well...she's doing something different with her music, she's a cute girl, and she's natural. I've only heard one of the songs from her first album, and I was pretty scared after that o_O But I do love her voice...

The Ponytail Roller Set - A Tutorial

This is my take on the ponytail roller set. Be advised...these sections are pretty big. In fact, the sections were so big, that I only had 6 on my head, and the middle never dried -__-

My curly fro afterwards wasn't very defined because my hair didn't get all that straight in the middle, but I redid it on Sunday, and used 10 sections instead of 6. In any case, the tutorial is a really good explanation of how I do a ponytail roller set. Hope it's not too long ;)

Famous.Fierce.Feisty - Janet Jackson????

It could very well be a texturizer...but I dunno. I think we can give "Ms. Jackson" the benefit of the doubt for now, especially since she cut her hair off a few days ago!

This could be her natural hair when in it's natural state, maybe with some product to get a little more texture. My mom's hair looks like this when wet--and she's 100% natural (and her name is also Janet)--so it's possible...

And this could be her natural hair straightened.

I really can't tell if she's natural or not, but hey...she looks GREAT!
